1986 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL
The R107SL from Mercedes-Benz are increasing in value. Some have silky 3-litre, 6-cylinder engine mated to a 4-speed automatic gearbox. Also they come complete with an optional body coloured hardtop.
Mercedes-Benz built quality cars in the 1980's. The solid thump that the driver's door provides when closing, proves the car's got great engineering qualities.
The Mercedes interior is not too sporty except the 4-spoke leather steering wheel's size, it feels comfortable and easy in your hands. The customary umbrella handle parking brake is replaced on certain models by a conventional transmission tunnel mounted lever. There are clear instruments in a cowl and a disciplined cockpit greet the driver with ergonomics, obviously being the car designer's top priority. The dark blue dashboard and carpets really compliment the Mercedes. There were seven different engine options offered on the SL from the 2.8-litre 6-cylinder to the powerful 5.6-litre V8. Its durability and longevity are well known with the same all-alloy engine being used to power just about every other Mercedes in the range.
The large steering wheel and power-assistance make things effortless but it soon becomes clear that this is more of a tower than an upright sports car. It has little feedback and soft suspension. The automatic gearbox is great as the gear change is very accurate and includes throughout the range. The brakes are excellent and pull the Mercedes up straight and even over uneven road surfaces.
The Mercedes-Benz SL ticks all the right boxes. The white bodywork with contrasting blue vinyl/velour interior may not be to everyone's choice but it really suits the Mercedes.
What you would be expected to pay for a good conditioned Mercedes-Benz 300SL would be in the region of £8000.
