1990 TVR 2.9S
The TVR S-series sports cars were introduced at the 1986 Motor Show
at Earl's Court. It was a retro styled, low-priced model. TVR are
based in Blackpool, Lancashire in the UK.
Using a lusty Ford V6 engine, the TVR delivered strong performance
and responsive handling. Assembled around a sturdy space-frame
chassis in the TVR tradition. The massive backbone chassis mean't
that unlike many open sports cars, the TVR retained the rigidity
necessary to make it fun to drive.
TVR has been making glassfibre bodies for a long time. You will find
little to fault with their workmanship. The S-series body shape is a
classic design. While the white colour scheme may not be the most
exciting option, the car is still rather attractive. The dark blue
hood with its two separate Targa-type panels are usually found in
good condition. Check underneath and you find chassis tubes and
chassis components all coloured a garnish red.
The TVR interior looks rather good. It has dark blue leather seats
and the whole interior seems quite sporty but classy at the same
time. The TVR has high-quality, stylish components but a slightly
crude handbrake that appears tacked on to the transmission tunnel as
an afterthought. The interior is quite comfortable especially for its
age.
The big, injected 2.9-litre Ford cologne power unit but it produces a
glorious gruff sound and delivers impressive grunt. Peak power
figures are all very well, but its ability to surge forward from low
revs in any gear. This makes the TVR such a fun car to drive.
It takes a while to get used to the high-mounted gear lever and
unassisted steering, but everything is slick and well-behaved.
Whatever may be lacking in ultimate refinement and sophistication,
there is no doubting the great styling of the TVR. The firm
suspension still copes well with rough undulating B roads.
If you want a bit more excitement, then the TVR has a lot in its
favour.
