Panther Solo PDF Print E-mail

The Solo was a mid-engined sports car from the British Panther Westwinds company. It was a 2 seat coupe, with an optional addition of rear seats to make it a 2 + 2.

[] Panther Solo 1

The first Solo, the Solo 1, was a simple mid-engined car.

Rear Wheel drive with a Ford 1.6 CVH Engine (as fitted in the XR2), this was design as a replacement for the traditionally styled Panther [Kallista]. With a glass-fibre body is was relatively low tech, and low cost. Unfortunately the Toyota MR2 MK I Mk1 was released just as this was due to go into production, as such a major rethink was in order, Panther could not compete with the Japanese giant.

It was decided to go "up market", a new panther was designed, a little larger (2+2) with a carbon composite body permanent 4WD and the heart from the Sierra Cosworth, The Panther Solo 2.

[] Panther Solo 2

The Solo 2 used the Ford/Cosworth 2.0 L (1993 cc) engine with a Ferguson four wheel drive system custom designed by Panther. It is not know exactly how many were built, as sometimes Panther would change the chassis number of prototype cars. All but three Solos were sold to the public, two were destroyed, one is still owned by the then owner of Panther cars.

The body was primarily aluminium honeycomb sandwiched between carbon fibre, this was designed and constructed by March Engineering.
